The Boy's Book About Indians (Illustrated Edition)

Edmund Tuttle was Post-Chaplain at Fort Russell, in the Wyoming Territory for three years during the early 1870s. As well, he spent many years among the Native American trives of Western New York. As a result, Tuttle had the opportunity to observe and interact personally with a variety of Native Americans.

Tuttle set out to produce a "fair" view of the American Indian that would appeal to boys (right, or wrong, the most common young audience writers attempted to attract in the late-19th and early-20th centuries). However, in some instances, it is not clear what he reports as factual is based solely on his own observations or an in-depth study of his subjects' beliefs and behaviors. Nonetheless, taken with the grain of salt that his reporting may reflect personal biases, the book provides readers with a reasonable background of many aspects of Indian life.

This edition of the book contains the six original illustrations, rejuvenated, and four additional place-, time-, and subject-relevant, iconic illustrations that are unique to this edition of the book.
