In 1994, a 23 year old Mariano flees Cuba on a makeshift raft. After having to do the unthinkable at sea, killing to survive, he is rescued after three days and sent to Guantanamo Bay. He eventually makes the US where he meets Sabel, an American graduate student. Not speaking the same language they begin a primitive, heart pounding affair that lasts 20 years.
