In order to pay his minister father's debts, young Grant postpones his college education to take a job as a Wall Street broker's clerk. When Grant Thornton's family owes a debt of some $260, Mrs. Thornton decides to sell her pearl necklace and bracelets. She sends Grant to New York City to sell the jewels to Mr. Clifton for $400. Grant makes a second trip to New York to see Mr. Henry Reynold, a stock broker. While living in Mr. Reynold's home, Grant is accused of stealing $1,000 in bonds. Willis, also an employee of Mr. Reynold, is eventually exposed as the thief and is fired. However he in turn abducts Mr. Reynold's son, Herbert, and taking him to Illinois. Grant must travel to across the country to Illinois to rescue the boy. Were this a print book, it would have about 260 pages.
