Born with superior intelligence and a set of mismatched eyes – one blue and one brown - fourteen-year-old Tess Solo is determined to find her family, but after years of praying to God for help, she remains an orphan.

Her government handler, Jack Morgan, sends her to the beleaguered crime lab in Detroit because he doesn't want her around his children. Though feeling hurt and rejected, she helps the team find a young Muslim girl who has been abducted. Her knowledge of Middle East culture and religion helps the team find the girl, but after she disobeys a direct order to rescue her, Tess fears her first day may be her last.
