The past changes as I change, and even while I ponder and write these pages transformations take place. As the shape of a mountain alters when one moves to a new position, so it is with a life. There is no "objective reality," only vantage points, or different levels in inner space, from which we see and which transform what we see.
My life falls into three periods. The first twenty-five years were the hardest, a time I looked back on for many years as unmitigated depression, as a "sick" period. The second span, from my twenty-fifth year to my early forties, consisted of discovering new relations to life and learning to trust new inner landscapes and climates within the context of Quakerism. The third period extends into my present sixties, a time characterized by a process of reconciling opposites, including a reciprocity between myself and events.
