Haugland is a work of fiction that is based on a true story that represents how my grandfather and his family worked in secret partisanship to undermine the Nazi regime in Norway during World War II. It is true that my grandfather and his family rescued forty refugees from the Nazis by transporting them from Norway to Shetland. They hid the refugees in the confines of the hull of their huge cargo and ferry ship Haugland 1. They were stuck in a horrific storm for three days and nearly capsized but managed to transport all of the refugees safely to Shetland. My great grandmother, Kristianne agreed to join her husband along the journey during her ninth month of pregnancy. They risked their lives to rescue these people and to overcome the Nazi regime in Europe.
