He was an enterprising youth pastor; she was an Auburn student on summer break in Alabama. The chance meeting between author Jeff Bayne and his future wife, Caryl, at church seemed to represent a sign of a God-ordained "match made in heaven". That joining would later be tested when Caryl was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, as recalled in his caregiver's testimony, I Didn't Know It Was Time to Die. His wife's illness was first noticed with shrunken muscles in her legs, a symptom of muscular/myotonic dystrophy. As the couple became parents, grappled with a divorce and remarried when her myotonic dystrophy became more apparent, Jeff was determined to stand by his wife. Her deteriorating health led both to question God's purpose of this illness and to rely on God in Caryl's last days. After Caryl's passing, Jeff handled grief through God and offers advice for widowed spouses that helped him.
