Ageless, ruthless, and vicious, Marquaisa is a pitiless vampire who has lusted for blood and gold since the days of the Roman Empire. A beautiful terror to behold, with ink-black hair and alabaster skin, and armed with a rapier and razor-sharp talons, she kills without mercy.

Insatiable, Marquaisa sets her sights on Louisbourg, the French fortress at the edge of the New World that defends the territories of New France that England and Spain covet. Predatory, she works from the shadows while the rivals compete in their high-stakes game: England, bent on conquering New France, is unleashing its military might on the massive fortress. France, cut off from New France, is counting on its stronghold to hold off the English. Spain, thinking it is buying New France, has rushed a fortune in gold bars into Louisbourg's port. Marquaisa, caring nothing for New France, means to revel in the carnage, and steal the treasure.

Immortal and seemingly unstoppable, the bane of Marquaisa's undead existence is the debt that she owes, the terms of whose payment make a mockery of her savage nature. It was not in her plans to be a slave to those terms, yet again, at Louisbourg. Amid the madness of the siege and the fury of her own mind, will she at last pay what is owing?
