Harry Moore's latest novel lifts the lid on the world of bankers, accountants and lawyers in their quest for fees.It starts with a dramatic opening that has implications throughout the story and then follows Gerard, the young and ambitious insolvency specialist as he wheels and deals, not always in the best interests of the business community. He and his colleagues in the professional sector pass work around to each other as they feed off businesses trying to survive. He comes into conflict with Tony a company doctor and turnaround consultant who challenges him as he works to secure the one big job that will make his career.
However, Gerard not only has Tony to contend with but his own wife, who enjoys the good life, the booze and the odd flirtation that lead her into trouble; the sort of trouble that comes into conflict with the law and threaten Gerard's career. When he finds that Tony might be involved in some way his world comes crashing down.
The story revolves around the business of Peveril Products where the owner Victoria and her colleagues try to survive increasing demands from the bank. It becomes a battleground between Tony and Gerard and other advisers. 'I think we are in danger of being over advised,' complains Victoria.
Tony appears to be the possible saviour of the business but does he not have his own agenda and what is it? Will Gerard find out the truth about his wife Julie and also what happened to his father who also seems to be implicated in the unfolding events.
As well as a story of the clash of personalities and love in the world of finance and business the novel also unravels the processes involved in saving a business from going broke. If you work in a business or professional environment you will certainly relate to this novel.
