Lyndon Johnson was a life-long politician from Texas, first working for a Texas Congressman, then running for his own Congressional seat and winning it. He progressed through the system, running for and winning a Senate seat, then becoming Majority Leader in the US Senate.
He finally aspired to be a candidate for US President (POTUS) and sought the Democratic Party selection in 1960. Unfortunately, a more popular US Senator John Kennedy from Massachusetts won the nomination. Johnson was coerced to run on the ticket as Kennedy's VP and they won the election.
Johnson became the President in a tragic turn of events when Kennedy was assassinated during a parade in Dallas, TX in November, 1963. His dream of becoming POTUS was realized in a bizarre manner.
Johnson inherited Kennedy's political programs, including the Vietnam War, the Voting and Civil Rights movement and a costly space program, racing the Russians to land a man on the moon.
Johnson completed Kennedy's term, ran and won a full four-year term of his own in 1964, but the stress and pressure caused him to quit at the end of that term. He refused to run for another term in 1968, and retired to his ranch in Texas.
There, the buildup of stress, coupled with some other bad news, caused his death of a heart attack at age 64.
