Dysregulation of apoptosis facilitates the appearance of pathologies related to aging, including neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, muscular, intestinal and kidney diseases. For its part, the disproportionate accumulation of senescent cells over time promotes overexpression of secretory molecules, such as extracellular matrix metalloproteinases, inflammatory cytokines and certain growth factors. Enzymes secreted by senescent cells are able to modify the tissue microenvironment of adjacent preneoplastic cells and facilitate the development of a tumor.
