First published in 1894 by an author once dubbed "The English Dumas", 'Under The Red Robe' is a fabulously old-fashioned swash-buckler with more characterisation and depth than one might expect from a novel of its kind.

The plot revolves around the exploits of a colourful hero, M. be Berault, in seventeenth-century France, starting from his arrest for an illegal duel. To escape the prescribed death penalty, he agrees to work for Cardinal Richelieu as a spy, with orders to hunt down and bring to Paris a M. Cocheforet, deemed to be an enemy of the state. The seemingly-straightforward mission is complicated by Berault's growing attachment to Cocheforet's beautiful young sister, as well as his unease with the bargain that he has made.

The story is told in the first person. Rather than the classic holier-than-thou hero, Stanley Weyman's leading man is a complicated personality, hiding his heroics beneath a veil of gambling and violence. The book is replete with classic elements of historical action-adventure tales like hidden jewels, drawn swords, close escape from death and daring raids, making up a truly great tale.
