Count Hannibal

The scene of the story is laid chiefly in Paris, at the time of the horrific St. Bartholomew massacre of the Huguenots in 1572, brought vividly to life in these pages. The hero, Count Hannibal, may leave us breathless with his despotic methods and his tyrannical way to win the girl he desires, but he is not abnormal; he is one of the Frenchmen who shared the temper which made the events of that era possible. Like the young Huguenot heroine, he is intensely human too as they live through the twists and turns of this wonderfully exciting tale.
