Sarah and James have left their comfortable urban life to live in a derelict farmhouse in the middle of a field. With their marriage breaking up, the move is intended to be a way forward. However, their problems accelerate alarmingly, fuelled by an array of bizarre and surprising local characters – Clive the sleazy, opportunistic builder, Di the overweight nurse with a waspish sense of humour, Ruby the pathological truth teller, Roberto Raftiche the Italian teacher who maintains a stunned optimism in the face of all the deceit and duplicity around him.
As things literally fall apart, relationships form and re-form in unexpected ways. The children always draw the short straw. Alcohol is always wonderful and destructive.
Legerdemain is a dark tale of human duplicity and strength with a twist of sardonic humour. Sometimes it is good to by-pass the clamour of now and cast a wary eye back to a time when everyone thought they'd found the answer to life's impossibilities, and of course to remember that failure is always the opportunity to start again intelligently.
