Confronting dominance of humanity

Ed Carmichael elects neuropreservation, cryo-storage of his head, expecting that cryonics will give him a new life after death. But on regaining consciousness after 50 years in storage, Ed finds that 'heads' like him are revived only for experimentation with consciousness in virtual reality. The experiments use expendable heads, like Ed, to fight an artificial intelligence incubating its sentient offspring inside captive humans.


It is a race against the rise of a new symbiotic species amongs humans for power and control. But, will life in virtual reality provide an option for all of humanity that neither humans nor the AI is as yet aware of?
