Once upon a time a wonderful man wrote a book about Army surgeons working in some of the sorts conditions during the Korean Conflict and making the best of it. H. Richard Hornberger (under the nom de plume of Richard Hooker) was a surgeon and knew his subject very well. It was a good book and a fantastic movie. He followed the novel up with a series of short stories finally published as "M*A*S*H Goes to Maine" and covered the early part of the men from the Swam as they set up shop on a small town in Maine.
A publisher got the bright idea of making money by hiring a second author to "work with" Hooker to write a series of other "M*A*S*H Goes To..." books. Very little of Hooker's writing appeared in these. And, they grew progressively more formulaic and relied on huge amounts of copied text from previous books to fi; lout the minimum page numbers. New characters were introduced and beaten into the ground while old friends were relegated to "guest appearance" status.
While Hooker compiled one final set of his own short stories, "M*A*S*H Mania" (1977) saw the ned of published stories of Hawkeye, Duke, Trapper John and the others.
Until, as they say, now!
Author Thomas Hudson has taken the reigns in this Fan Fiction collection of short stories in the vein of what H. Richard Hornberger gave his many fans. In this book are better than a baker's dozen stories about the Swamp men and how they set medicine on it's ear--and save a lot of lives the other doctors used to lose.
Each story is an homage to the original ideas behind M*A*S*H and attempts to capture Hooker's style. Do yourself a big favor when reading these. Hornberger never cared for the TV cast, so try to picture the movie characters. There were what this author thought about when writing the stories.
WARNING: As stated above, this is "fan fiction," and as such was written without permission from any entity holding copyright to the characters. It was not his intent to supplant or claim any copyright to anything previously written and published, but he does claim copyright to all of these new stories.
