This non-fiction book is written in the form of travelers log day by day, describing an adventures and personal experiences during the 39 days long route trip around the country and includes a many historical, geographical and general facts and curiosities.
The author is also the main character narrating his story starting in the beginning of 2014 after suffering a serious accident. Opening part is closely introducing the author, his previous journeys around the country, hobbies and interest and the recovery time after the accident. First chapter starts the road trip leaving the author's place of residence in Washington DC Metropolitan Area (city of Bethesda, MD) heading up north through New York City to New England covering the states of Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.
After nine days spend in the most prestige areas of the northeastern region of the US, getting known its Colonial past, spectacular Atlantic coastline, national parks and forested mountains the trip continues along the Niagara Falls into Canada. One day in Toronto brings the tour back to the US around the Great Lakes all the way to Michigan's Upper Peninsula and dropping down south to Chicago, the third biggest city in the country. The Midwest states visit is furthermore passing through Iowa, Minnesota and North Dakota towards the main destination of the trip, the Glacier National Park in Montana. Camping and hiking in this incredible landscape is definitively one of the most powerful experience of the entire trip.
The next direction is to the south through the mountains among a many breaks on the road to Phoenix, Arizona, the author's previous place of residence. In the following ten days the narrator is often confronted with his past, letting the readers uncover his eventful life and short love romance. Making a hard decision to return back to the East Coast is the right choice to finish the journey and accomplish the original plan, reinvent after the accident and visit all 48 contiguous states. The great achievement comes with the stopover in Kentucky, the last missing state and safely return back to Maryland, recognizing the state as the place of belonging. Raising from own ashes and endurance to keep going in life become the priceless experience from the trip.
