What happens when a middle-class baby boomer goes up against a cold-blooded professional killer? Susan Ryker is everywoman. She is a mother, an artist, a teacher. She's just been through a messy divorce. She has real concerns and problems to occupy her time. She is old enough to have no more illusions -- but young enough to still have all kinds of hope. And then Susan Ryker witnesses a murder. Unknown to Susan, she witnessed more than just a death. She is also witnessed the death of her own peace of mind -- the termination of her close ties with her daughter -- the end of forty-some years of a relatively benign existence in the small town of Booker Bend, Oregon.
