Although Lord Byron is known best for his poetry and his exciting and romantic reputation as a great lover, he also had many non-romantic interests. He traveled widely across Europe, especially in Italy where he lived for seven years. Later in life, Byron joined the Greek War of Independence fighting the Ottoman Empire, for which many Greeks revere him as a national hero. He died one year later at age 36 from a fever contracted while in Missolonghi. He also was a champion of the Irish and joined in debates for greater Irish civil rights in Great Britain for those of the Roman Catholic faith. The debate below shows just how eloquent Lord Byron could be on the subject of Catholic Emancipation.
