On a cold, snowy night in December near Louisburg, N.C., 81-year-old Adam must decide if he will keep the promise he make, many years ago, to his wife Eve as they celebrate their 60 years of marriage in front of the fireplace. Adam makes a decision and journeys to the lake, where they have spent many happy days with their family, for one last time.
THE FIREPLACE
We sit in silence and gaze into the fire.
She comes, she goes, and sometimes she smiles.
I see that sixteen-year-old girl in her smile.
She squeezes my hand as the moment slowly disappears.
The flames in the fireplace dance in her eyes as photos of our grandkids stare at us from the walls.
Time has taken away some of her memories, but not any of my love.
