Remember fairy tales? They're back. Tucked away in the remote ruts and ravines of Southern Appalachia is a place called Widows Hollow where men die young, where women trade their dreams for hardships and where children surrender their childhoods to the harshest of realities. The strangers came first for the timber, next, for the coal. Now, they have returned-for Widows Hollow. And there is no one to stop them but sixteen- year- old Pick McKinley who is illiterate, impoverished, and newly orphaned with four siblings. Pick is cursed with a fear of strangers and has a hatred for the word hillbilly. Pick is no hillbilly. She is a survivor who is determined to save her home and her community from the rich, powerful bigots who have vowed to destroy them. And she will fight with the only weapons that she has; faith and a fairy tale.
