What Max Temple and Nara Lei uncovered has them running, trying desperately to stay alive, but with the CIA involved the odds are heavily stacked against them.
As the lead superintendent for Courtland Construction, a prominent company in Southern California, Max discovers a ledger in a briefcase given to him by his boss, Calvin Courtland; the original ledger used for a Central American drug operation. But he soon realizes it's more than just a ledger.
He finds a document inside the rear lining implementing high-ranking officials in the U.S., Mexican, and Nicaraguan governments that are involved in channeling money to ex-Sandinista leader, Adolfo Serrano, to finance an emerging threat to overthrow the current Nicaraguan government.
The mastermind of the drug-smuggling operation, Jeep Brenner, his cohort Sondra Morning, and the CIA are hotly pursuing Max and Nara. Brenner wants the document and the billions set aside for the revolution and to eliminate Serrano. Sondra Morning wants the power and luxury that accompanies the fortune. The CIA wants the list of US government officials involved.
Trapped in a breakneck race to stay alive, Max and Nara flee to Bangkok, Thailand, Nara's homeland and what they believe is a safe haven, but they quickly realize it's as perilous as a bed of spitting cobras. They sidestep close encounters with Brenner and escape to a temple in Chiang Mai in northern Thailand.
Brenner is relentless, and so is the CIA. A shoot-out at the temple leaves two dead, the CIA still looking for the document, and Max and Nara without much of a future.
