About THE ELEVEN PENSTROKES OF DANTE NIN

From 1994 through 1999, whenever their careers kept them apart, Andorran architect Dante Nin penned wildly erotic fantasies for his sexually modest lover. Building upon her self-conscious replies to his provocatively taboo questions he created tales of boundary-breaking sensuality and whispered them into her imagination from across the miles. What he learned about her capacity for sexual pleasure both shocked and inspired him.

While each of Dante's narratives was a singular romantic adventure complete unto itself, all shared a decisive moment in their telling: a choice. At a predetermined point Dante would ask his lover to choose between two alternatives, and thenceforth his carnal chronicle proceeded along the course shaped by her decision.

About "An Influence of Waves"

Three months before they were to be married, Dante was separated from his fiance, Sarah, by an overseas business commitment. As was his custom during their all-too-frequent partings he composed a salacious portrait-in-words for sharing with her over the telephone, but because phone service at the jobsite on Saint Lucia was unreliable, he wrote "An Influence of Waves" as a week-long succession of fantasy dates and mailed her one chapter a day. Characteristic of his aphrodisiacal tales is the moment when Sarah is asked to make a decision that will determine the unfolding of the rest of the story.

In "An Influence of Waves," her choice of evening attire will either confirm or rescind an impromptu erotic invitation offered to an officer aboard the cruise ship Costa Maya B'alam.

"Influence" is set on the Caribbean Sea between Galveston, Texas, and Roatan, Honduras. Although it is the first of Dante's provocative narratives to be transcribed from script, it is chronologically sixth among the eleven he composed for his long-distance assignations with Sarah. On an onion-skin page preceding each airmailed chapter he penned the words he normally whispered into the phone by way of introduction to his seductive tales:

"Clear your mind, my darling, of every preconceived notion you have about lovemaking and romance and sex and pleasure and the boundaries prescribed for us by implicit convention. Tonight there is only my voice in your ear, my imagination entwined naked around yours, my invitation and permission for you to feel anything and everything you have ever desired to feel, my gift of YES! to your mind and body.

"Are you listening?"
