Specific ideas for these meditations have emerged in the last few years, but I have been asking questions about Friends and the arts for a long time. Why had music, to which I was drawn, been historically excluded from Quakerism, to which I was also drawn? Are there connections between one discipline and another? Is there a relationship between music and the spiritual life?
The writing, which took form during a Pendle Hill week-day Meeting for Worship, has had a life of its own. Composers sometimes write variations on a theme. With words, my theme is a D scale, a moment of truth, explored from several perspectives--teaching and learning, music and Quakerism, and the spiritual journey. I quote from the King James Version of the Bible, since it was the translation which Fox used and the one I first heard read as a child. "Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God" (Mark 10:14).
