Although there are certainly notable exceptions, many management books are authored by advisors and consultants that may never have been on the day to day management firing line. The same goes for college professors that become immersed in management theory because that is what is written in the course syllabus or what is outlined in the textbook. That is not to say these folks are wrong or not informative, it is just to convey that there is more to management than theory and concept.
After thirty seven years as a supervisor / manager, I have become convinced that management in the real world is different from what you will find in "textbook management." Many of the obstacles that managers are confronted with on a daily basis are resolved by using instincts that are developed through experience, and experience oftentimes comes from lessons that are learned the hard way.
Even though this book is written with first-time managers in mind, there are plenty of lessons for seasoned managers as well. There is no technical stuff. There is some history, some philosophy, a little bit of baseball and even a couple of cartoon characters that tell the story about how to develop management instinct.
You'll find this is not your typical management book. You will not read about management buzzwords like: "strategic management", or "globalized markets" or even "corporate leadership." No, that is not what this book is about.
In "The Instinctive Manager", you will read about:
*Riding a dead horse
*The NO DECISION
*"We have met the enemy and he is us."
*DO SOMETHING, even if it's wrong
*Pick your battles
* And other catch phrases that were from the notes that I compiled in that thirty seven year management career
Albert Einstein summed it up best when he stated: "The only source of knowledge is experience." In "The Instinctive Manager" you will read about some of my experiences as a career middle manager and the ten common sense instincts that I developed from my trials and triumphs along the way.
