Because "the nobility could have seen it as a mockery”, “Die Poggenpuhls” (The Poggenpuhl Family) by Theodor Fontane was initially denied publication. The novel was finally released in 1896 and revolves around a noble family going through financial troubles in Berlin. The politically influenced social novel is mostly focused on female characters, which was rare at the time of its publication. There are quite a few parallels to Fontane's later masterpiece “Der Stechlin” (The Stechlin), especially with its focus on dialogue and characterization as the primary plot drivers.
