Why do the narratives of Poetic Realism often culminate in renunciation? And how did this German literary epoch finally come to an end? Is there any unity in the numerous “isms” that took its place around 1900? This volume seeks to answer these questions in terms of historical processes. Individual studies present a structural model of realistic narrative, proposing the notion of “routines” as a unifying principle of the Early Modern Era.
