High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The RTÉ Sports Person of the Year is an important all-sport award in Irish sport. The accolade is given to one sportsman or sportswoman, usually Irish, every year. The winner of the award is decided by a panel of experts who choose a winner from a shortlist of candidates towards the end of the calendar year. The 2006 panel of experts included Eamon Dunphy, George Hook, Pat Spillane, Cyril Farrell, Ted Walsh and Jerry Kiernan, who controversially overlooked world indoor athletics champion Derval O'Rourke for the honour. A number of other awards are presented at the ceremony, including the team of the year and Hall of fame awards.
