Hard Times

'Hard Times' is one of Dickens' shorter works, but is well worth reading. On one level it is a critique of industrialised society, satirising the ideas of utilitarian thinkers like Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. On another level it is a work of art, full of sly, biting humour and what George Orwell called a 'generous anger.'
