I have tried to prove it in this paper. Firstly, in every chapter I have presented the most important features of a symbol. Then I have tried to summarize the Mea&dgrave;s and Assman&ngrave;s theories which deal with the personal and collective identity. I have just chosen the points, which seem to draw an analogy between symbol and identity. I have focused on the crucial influence of symbols on the creation of identities.
