Focusing upon three legal sections from the Book of Deuteronomy, Levinson advances the argument that this legislation reflects the struggle of the authors to renew late seventh century Judean society. Integrating the most recent research on the redaction of Deuteronomy, the author further argues that biblical interpretation must attend to both diachronic and synchronic textual dimensions.
