How People Judge Policing

How does the public judge the police? The police are not and probably never have been, universally popular. The public is diverse and it has long been recognized that this is reflected in divergen: attitudes towards the police. However, a degree of public support is vital if the police are to work effectively. So how do members of the public assess what police officers do, particularly when they are using their powers to investigate crime, to stop suspects and to arrest offenders?
