FDR, the Vatican, and the Roman Catholic Church in America, 1933-1945

Drawn from a 1998 conference of the same name, 16 papers explore the relationship between the Protestant president, the Catholic hierarchy in Rome, and the Catholic Church in the United States. After a couple of general overviews of the topic, papers address the reaction of the Catholics and their church to the policies of the New Deal. The following section examines issues of war and foreign policy, which naturally leads to more of a focus on the Vatican than in the preceding section. The final essay explores the Vatican's response to the Holocaust, specifically focusing on the issuance, in 1998, of the document We Remember: A Reflection on the Shoah.
