Urban Education in the United States: A Historical Reader

In this reader on the history of American urban education, Rury (education, U. of Kansas) presents 16 relatively recent pieces of scholarship (although one dates back to 1972) that collectively survey the development of urban school systems from their origins in the late 18th and early 19th centuries to the voucher and "high stakes" debates of today. Among the topics explored in the various historical case studies are bureaucracy and curricular differentiation, teacher unionism and public school finance, intelligence testing, the treatment of "special children," the origins of Chicano educational protest in the 1960s, and recent voucher experiments.
