Social protection is fast becoming an essential component of development policy. This collection examines the key conceptual frameworks available for analysing social protection; discusses the political processes shaping the emergence of social protection institutions; and provides a comparative study of social protection policies focused on the poor and the poorest. Drawing on key case studies from Africa, Latin America and Asia, the contributors assess policy options and map the future of social protection in developing countries.
