Beyond Sovereignty

Transnationalism has emerged as one of the key subjects in the contemporary world. Beyond Sovereignty puts transnationalism and empire in the same frame of analysis, and explores the central role of the British empire in developing transnational ideas, institutions and social movements of increasing scope and influence in the eras of high imperialism and the two world wars. Contributions by leading scholars follow transnational developments in the domains of sexuality, law, politics, culture and religion. Together, they illuminate historical challenges to the principle of sovereignty, and connect imperial history to current debates in global politics.
