Academics and the Real World

Evans (history and theology, U. of Cambridge, UK) examines the changing relationship between universities and wider society, focusing on some of the most controversial issues being debated right now, including corporate funding of research, political involvements of faculty, the purpose of teaching, and the relationship between faculty and administration. Coming mainly from a UK vantage point, she suggests that the current situation of academies is a confrontation between truth and power and she suggests that the value of truth to a society demonstrates clearly what side of the controversies academics should come down on.
