A tale of pain, love, and creativity reverberating through generations

One day Clara Reinecke gives her grandson, Jonathan, a composer at a prestigious New York conservatory, one of her most treasured possessions—a rolled up music manuscript—together with a faded photograph and a short handwritten letter. She tells him a story of 1940s war-torn Warsaw, describing daily life in the Jewish ghettos—the unspeakable cruelty, the disregard for human life, the acts of betrayal and sacrifice, the small unexpected moments of kindness and normality. She describes to him a composer who met the woman of his dreams in these desperate times, and wrote a piece of music of unsurpassed beauty, in open defiance of the demand that his work honor the Führer.
