The initial portion of the crisis involves a longer-running political battle between ex President Manuel Zelaya, with his leftward policy drift which culminated in a push to authorise a Constitutional Assembly to write or reform the Honduran constitution with a fourth ballot box referendum, which is unconstitutional, and the remainder of the Honduran political establishment, which largely opposed the policies and considered the assembly illegal.
