Imagining Early Modern London: Perceptions and Portrayals of the City from Stow to Strype, 1598-1720

London underwent phenomenal social and cultural change in the century that followed the publication of John Stow's Elizabethan classic A Survey of London. The essays in this book explore for the first time the impact of these dramatic developments upon the mental, social and physical worlds of Londoners during the long seventeenth century. Different essays explore how generations of very different Londoners--men and women, antiquaries, merchants and beggars--experienced, interpreted and responded to their changing environment.
