Deck on Deck is filled with chronicles by Bob Deck, a Mississippi River riverboat pilot, during the boom time of Minnesota's Twin Cities barge business. Deck was a deckhand as a teenager and a captain by the age of 22. His book paints a vivid and nostalgic portrait of a working life on the river in the 1970s and 1980's and provides tips on how to guide six barges and 5,000 tons of grain through tricky stretches of water in St. Paul, Minnesota.
