In 1415, King Henry V of England sailed fifteen hundred ships from Southampton to the mouth of the Seine. His goal? To take the port of Harfleur in Normandy as a base from which to invade France.
Amée de Gaucourt lives in Graville, three miles from Harfleur. She is a physician, unusual for a woman in medieval France. Amée meets an English mapmaker, Nicholas Perche, a man who infuriates her more than any she has known. With him is Pyper, a French boy who cannot speak but whose song stirs the marshes to eerie life.
Disease strikes Graville. The French think it is the plague. To save his village the mayor makes a deal with the English that will have deadly consequences and as King Henry's fleet sails into the Seine, Amée must leave Nicholas for the safety of Harfleur's walls. War has come to France and they are on opposite sides. Trapped in Harfleur Amée must fight her own battle, between her loyalty to her country and her love for an Englishman.
