The author entered the service of the US Army on March 10, 1943. He received basic training at Camp Wheeler's Infantry Replacement Center in Macon, Georgia. After four months training, he was sent overseas to Casablanca, North Africa. The author spent twenty-nine months in Africa, Italy, and Europe and landed during the first wave in the invasion of southern France. He was discharged on December 7, 1945 at Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania. This book was written in the 1980s and early 1990s after the author's retirement from the United States Postal Service in 1983. It was published in 2011 due to the public's renewed interest in World War II and at the urging of friends who read the manuscript.
