The Belt of Fire: 2: A Matter of Perspective

Life in the small rural town of Barrington, in the heart of the balmy northlands, has become intolerable for James Braedon. His mother wants him grow up and be a man, his father is always away from home working, his little sister gives him no peace, and his duties as leader of the daily water brigade have become an embarrassment. Being called a young man simply means that he is just the oldest boy. There seems to be no escape. Brother Dolphis, the new town priest, was rumored to have had an exotic life of danger and excitement once. But here he is too, stuck in the middle of nowhere. James desperately wants his life to change.
And then his father comes home with a job offer. James is to be a Scavenger in the south like his Dad. Never mind that the south is a lifeless desert of deadly heat and constant danger. Never mind that the position is only open because another man died on the job. James is ready to move on.
In a few short weeks, he has a new life far away from home, a real job, and his hometown has been destroyed by the dreaded Chaosium terrorists. As far as he knows, everyone he has ever loved is dead, everything he has ever known lays in ruins.
