Henry has moved back to his childhood home of Mystic Connecticut with his wife Ellen, a Harvard-trained physician who has been hired to run the same local rehabilitation hospital where Patience has been quietly healing physically impaired patients with her unique style of Vipassana spiritual healing. Ellen, accomplished and driven and the scion of a wealthy family used to getting their way, becomes suspicious of Patience's relationship with Henry and her unorthodox style of healing, and hatches a plot to remove Patience from the hospital and Henry's life.

Just when Ellen thinks she has won the battle, a revelation by Charles Mason, the wealthy owner of the hospital, and secret patron of Henry and Patience since childhood, turns the tables on Ellen and forces her to turn to the only person who can heal the deep wounds she never knew she had.
