Look-alike Spanish/English cognates are exceptionally useful to teachers and students of Spanish and English for three reasons: (1) their similar spellings and pronunciations provide an easily accessible vocabulary in the new language; (2) the contrast between them facilitates an understanding of the phonetics of the language to be acquired; and (3) the number of lexical similarities between the languages provides beginning students of either with an encouraging appreciation of the affinity between them.
