Oh, for all that's holy. What does she want? All I wanted was a few minutes of peace and quiet to think about CJ and my friends across the pond during my lunch break on Salem Common.
"What?!" I shouted into my phone, too angry and miserable to care.
"I'm sorry to bother you, Angie," my mom said evenly, "but there's a man here waiting for you."
"What?" I huffed incredulously.
"I'm serious, dear," her voice dropped to a hushed whisper, "and he insists on staying here until he sees you. He's from a company with some sort of Italian name... Belladonna...Belarus...Bari..."
Blood drained from my entire body. I bolted upright.
"Bellatori?" I asked cautiously.
"Yes, that's it!" she exclaimed.
I gasped trying to remember how to breathe. The phone slipped from my ear, and I shoved it into my pocket as my feet flew across the Common.
Were the Bellatori Dei breaking their year-long silent treatment of me? The Bellatori I could handle, but the alternative made my heart screech to a halt and my feet run faster.
What if Aeterna Flamma didn't need a hundred years to recuperate? What if last year's battle was only a precursor to the real event? What if the guy in my living room right now-sitting with my mom and siblings-was actually my five-thousand-year-old vampire stalker?
There was only one way to find out. Taking a deep breath, my seemingly disembodied hand slowly turned the front door knob. Despite the hazy, hot, and humid summer day, fear froze every inch of my body.
