An Even Break 1.5: Violent Interlude

Call it luck or call it the grace of God, William Sparrow knew that he and Adam Sterling had not survived much less won the victories they had without a large measure of one or both. But the immediate emergencies had been dealt with finally and know they had space and time to set themselves so they could face the threat coming from the east--the largest army in Mirandan history led by the best general that history had so far produced.

Now Commander of the Army of the West, Sparrow knew he did not have the knowledge he needed to face the man called Morner. To do that, Sparrow had to go back to school for a while.

But the White Queen's Conqueror was not the only threat Sparrow faced. The Shadows knew where he was and they were not afraid to go after him there. And if killing innocents would help them get to him, they were not afraid to do that either.

Sparrow only wanted to gain skill and knowledge. He didn't want to fight more battles. He just wanted to learn what he needed to know for the war that was coming. But when the Shadows killed friends and threatened the lives of those he loved, Sparrow had to set aside his lessons and take up the role of teacher so that he could make sure the Shadows learned something important:
