Education for Extinction: American Indians and the Boarding School Experience, 1875-1928

This study is the story of how policymakers sought to use the school house--specifically the boarding schools--as an instrument for acculturating Indian youth to 'American' ways of thinking and living. It describes how students responded to these efforts, including the story of what happened when they returned to their reservation homes.
