The handbook is not named for an exclamation of surprise, but for Teik E. Oh (anaesthesia and pain medicine, Royal Perth Hospital), who developed it from a collection of handouts for junior doctors and nurses and edited the editions from 1979 to 1997. It provides quick assess to information that will help in the practical management of diseases and problems encountered in an intensive care unit. Here the classifications of both coronary artery disease and mechanical ventilation have been reworked, new material added on blast injury and biological warfare, and most chapters and their references updated.
